For a used car, just opt for lowest miles/best maintenance history. And a thorough test drive, of course. For an older model 9-5, I'd do a sludge check.
CR does an annual report on cars, new and used, that ranks the used ones according to how troublesome they've been. But, like all things statistical, the results apply to the group, not necessarily individual members of the group. FWIW, CR does give the 9-5 a recommended rating as a new car and, if memory serves, a best bet as used.
Our twin '99 9-5s are judged potentially problematic by the CR system. But neither one has needed anything except scheduled maintenance in years, neither uses oil between 3,000 mile changes, neither has a rattle and both respond happily to anything they're asked to do in a New England winter.
Since the 9-5 hasn't changed all that much from year to year, my .02 is to thoroughly check out the particular vehicle you're interested in. Don't lock in on a particular year just because that's what the stats tell you to do. After all, statistically speaking, the Jints aren't supposed to be world champs.
Just this value consumer's humble opinion ...
