Do NOT listen to him. The V6 was NOT discontinued due to it being a troublesome engine!!! The ONLY reason it wasn't continued in 2004 was because there were marketing issues, there was a lack of interest from buyers. The 4-cylinder gave equal power and was cheaper and got better gas mileage (not by much). The only advantage to the V6 was that it was smooth, and offered a more luxurious, refined ride. At almost $40k new it wasn't worth the extra money. But as used cars, the prices are the same as the 4-cyls and the V6 doesn't suffer from many of the head gasket, head bolt, PCV, sludge, etc... problems the 2.3's do. I don't know where this guy is getting his information but he is totally wrong. It's true that back in the 90's Saab used a similar V6 in the 9000 and 900 and THAT was a total joke. But the V6 in the 9-5 is much improved and is very reliable. Don't get me wrong, it's not a Honda/Toyota in terms of reliability; you're going to have to spend some money to maintain it, as you probably experienced with your 2001 4-cyl. As long as you change the timing belt and tensioners every 60k miles you'll get lots of miles out of it. My 2001 V6 has 175k miles on it now and it's running like a champ. I'm not going to lie, I just spent $1500 to rebuild the turbo, but you would have had to do that on the LPT 4-cyl too. Do a search on the board, there are a ton a 4-cyl V6 comparisons. Everyone once in a while you get a die-hard Saab loyalist who only believes in the 4-cyl and will dis the V6, but everyone else agrees that they're just as reliable if not more than the 4-cyl. I think you should enlighten your friend so he stops scaring more people away from the V6 for reasons that aren't true. Good luck, and go buy that car!
