In anticipation of a road trip, I wanted to see how many bikes I could comfortably fit into the back of the wagon. I don't like roof racks for the reduce fuel economy, and didn't want to put a hitch and rack on the back.
Seeing the thread linked below, I can safely say, that 3 bikes can easily fit in the back, rear seats folded down, seats removed (or dropped, if small size frame), and front wheel removed. 2 bikes can easily fit with the larger half of the seats folded down.
I made an internal fork mount rack, much like the Volvo XC70 system or Honda Element accessory. Slide the rear wheel in first, and secure the fork. The mounts or bolted onto a 1x6 board across the trunk space. There was no need to dig into the spare wheel space or remove the rear seats.
The great thing is, there is room for bags between the hatch and the front forks, as well as in between the bikes. The bikes take up most of the front-to-back room, unless you remove the rear seat bottom(s) and set them on the floor (or leave them at home).
The rack took me about two hours, and $50 (2 Thule mounts + harwdware) to make. I liked this MUCH better than several hundred for a hitch or roof system.
If anyone is interested, I'll post pics :)
