I have always observed a 5,000 mile oil change interval and have only used synthtic oil. Almost exclusively Mobil-1, but I have used Shell Rotella-T synthetic a couple times, and have recently changed to ELF. I initially used 10W/30 as per the owner's manual, then used 0W/40 European Formula for a brief period, but have been using 5W/40 for the past 3 years now.

The Mobil-1 and ELF brand oils in 5W/40 weight are SL rated oils, rather than the newer SM rating, and are marketed for diesel engines. The SL rated oils are claimed to contain more anti-wear additives than SM, but these additives can/may damage your catalytic converter if your engine burns too much oil.

I also use oversized oil filters intended for the PT Cruiser Turbo (Purolator PL20195 or equivalent) but with 5,000 mile OCI this is more for my peace of mind than engine wear.

I try to stay curent with all of Saab's Technical Service Bulletins, which have been predominately the PCV system, and self perform all major service at the 60,000 mile intervals.

I have had the valve cover off twice, once to replace the head bolts due to the multiple reports of insufficient factory torque, and the second time to replace the cheap off-brand valve cover gasket I used the first time after it began to weep oil. No evidence of sludge in the cam area. I have not removed the pan to inspect for sludge there.

I add a can of Techron Concentrate fuel system cleaner and replace the sparkplugs (inexpensive for the non-Aero) at 10,000 mile intervals.

I really enjoy this car!
