It's really not that confusing.

There's the base engine, a 2.3lpt "light pressure turbo" with 185ish hp, was 175, later 185. 2.3lpt span the early years 99-00-01 and the 02-03-04-05. 2002 and up 2.3lpt's are called Linears. 2002 and up was Linears, Arcs and Aeros. Before 2002 only the Aero had a name, the V6's were "SE"s and the lpt's were just plain old 9-5's from 99-01.

There's a MCE or mid cycle enhancement that occurred for the 2002 and up models, a mild styling revision with plastic headlight lenses, and some tweaks like a 5-speed auto instead of a 4-speed, and sport seats for the Aero models.

The 200hp asymmetrically turbo'd (a turbo on only on half the exhaust that pressurized all the cylinders) V6 model goes back to 1999 too, but only as far forward as 2003. The 2002 and 2003 Arcs were V6's and the standard equipment level was high including the premium package and vented ( not A/C really but simple venting fans) seats. 04 and 05 Arcs reverted to a 2.3 liter turbo model with 220hp and the formerly standard loaded version of the Arcs got shifted over to a premium package optional set-up. Whereas you know an 02-03 Arc is loaded, you've gotta' check an 04-05 for the upgrades. So V6's from 1999 to 2003 are very desirable Saabs. The V6's in the 9-5s have proved to be even more reliable than the four cylinder turbos (not the case with other older Saab models that gave the V6 a black eye) and are somewhat smoother.

Aero folks know who they are I'm fond of saying. Aeros began in 2000 and continue. Aeros have a 2.3 HOT, high output turbo with 235 to 265hp. wider/lower 17" wheels with lower stiffer sport suspension, and starting with the 2002 MCE, the killer sport seats. Aeros are also known for their lower front spoiler. Not only is the suspension lower putting the spoiler closer to the ground but the spoiler is deeper too, so Aeros are easy to scrape the spoiler and just about anything. No problem if you're into the performance toys, that's the trade off, otherwise a royal pain in the....

V6 Saabs and all Aeros come standard with the premium package including, memory drivers seat. That's the tip off, does it have the memory buttons on the side of the drivers seat? Additional premium package stuff is the Harmon Kardon sound, and an auto dimming and on late models a Home Link inside rear mirror. For music lovers the H/k sound in the premium package is a must as the Harmon Kardon system is world class.

2002 and up models can also be had with a touring package that included xenon headlights, rain sensing wipers and rear park assist. And almost all years vented seats were an option. Vented seats were standard on the 02-03 V6 Arcs.

There's really no reason to endorse or reject any year though some folks take issue with the first year 1999's. Newer more expensive with warranty or older higher mileage, they are all good.

And they all come in cool SportWagons, the ultimate Saab hatchback and IMHO a better more distinctive looking car than the sedan version.
