I can't help but think that your feelings are in part based on the stereotypical image that sticks are the "real" thing, and that automatic in some way takes away a part of the driver involvement in operating the car. Both of these are true to a degree, but mask the fact that an automatic does things the same way each and every time, unlike a drivers hand and foot. Also, the automatic definitely shifts gears faster,no questions asked, each and every shift. A driver powershifting a manual transmission still does not match the speed of a good automatic. This is one reason why even the most sophisticated race cars in the world now use some form of automatic transmisson.
In city traffic is where this problem of the low rpm dead spot is most apparent. It is in situations where you need to just keep lplodding along in slow moving traffic where the second gear low rpm performance is in my opinion, terrible.
Luckily for many of us, Saab is playing around with the semi auto paddle shifted transmission that is on the 9X and 9-3X. I believe that they are working with the same unit that is just srarting to make an appearance on the newest M-3. Even though I think that BMW has overly complicated the switch and program selection arrangement(they tend to complicate many things), I believe that this arrangement which maintains a constant mesh gearbox with a hydraulically controlled clutch will replace the conventional manual transmission within ten years, but the majority of producton cars will use automatics.
Try your five speed again in the manner I suggested, then do the same thing in just about any automatic. If it is a turbo, so much the better. I think you will see the difference.
