You are partially correct about the differences between a torque converter based auto like Tiptronic, and full racing electro-hydraulic style transmissions like those in formula cars, but fact is, in drag racing, the vast majority of the lesser classes use automatics, and in the pro classes, they use a multi plate auto engaging slutch system that functions automatically,ie:without driver intervention.
I stand by my statement that a majority of racing classes are moving away from a traditional manually shifted, driver operated clutch system.
As for your Passat Tiptronic,I tend to agree with you. On most of the vehicles equipped with a similar system, the manual control is just commanding the electronics to do what they would have otherwise done at a predetermined speed and load setting. The fact is, once the command to shift has been given, the time it takes to shift is still fairly slow, but in everyday vehicles I believe that this is a conscious decision by the engineers to allow the transmission to shift in a way that would be non perceptible by the driver. A faster shift would result in harshness that most drivers would not want.
As for automatic gearbox operation, I think that Saab's sport mode makes far more sense for everyday driving, and if you can activate a faster downshift by slight foot pressure, why bother taking your hand off the wheel to move a stick left or right? It's an awkward hand movement anyway.
The big advantage that I see in electro-hydraulic transmissions in that they retain positive drive mechanism in the clutch, but remove the workload from the driver of operating it. Also, having solenoid valves and electronics move the gearsets inside the transmission removes the work of my having to so it, and allows you to select either an automatic program to shift when you are not in the mood, or lets you operate the paddles on the wheel when you are.
Any of these systems is superior to having to manually clutch and shift, at lease that's the way I now see it. I have been driving sticks for thirty five plus years, and will be transitioning to a Aero with automatic within a month or so.
Like I said before, I think the clutch and manual trans will go the way of the buggy whip ot the carbueretor within ten years.
