Needs to be DOT 4 fluid.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Brake Fluid?, Blake, Tue, 8 Apr 2008 08:36:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
At AutoZone, or any other traditional auto store, your only choice for brake fluid with a DOT 4 rating will probably be Valvoline. Check their price and compare against the ATE brand DOT 4 brake fluids available on-line since you said you will be ordering parts anyway.
The WIS identifies the braking system on our 9-5's as containing 0.9 litres. One quart may not be quite enough, and brake fluid cannot be safely used after storage once the container has been opened, so plan on wasting part of what you buy.
Most brake fluid sold in the US is DOT 3. DOT 4 is also mineral oil based (like DOT 3) but is rated for a higher temperature. DOT 5 is a silicone based fluid. I am fairly certain DOT 5 is NOT compatible with DOT 3 and DOT 4 fluids.
