Yeah I tried doing it without removing the panel too and got too worried I was going to drop the screws down into the abyss of wires, brackets, and duct work behind the dash. I didn't want to have to duct tape the cup holder in that I had just blown $75 on. Removing the whole dash panel isn't that big of a deal. I sort of enjoy taking stuff apart and it was interesting to get a look back there. Lots of stuff is just held in place by clips that make horrifying cracking sounds as you un-clip them. Scared me half-to-death until I got used to the sounds, haha. Good luck!
