Highway Fuel Economy -93 v. 89 octane

I just returned from a long driving trip in my '07 9-5 Aero. I filled up the tank early with premium and zero'd the odometer. Cruise control was used extensivly, set at around 73 mph. It included miles climing and decending a mountain range. All Interstate driving.
Fuel economy for the firt tank was 31.36 mpg (calculated by dividing gallons required to refill the tank into the odometer reading). Interestingly, the SID indicated about 1 mpg higher.
The next tank of premium included a mix of highway, city, and stop & go expressway travel. Actual fuel economy was 27.16 mpg.
The third refill was 89 octane "plus" gasoline. Speed varied from 35 mph to 73 mph with frequent stops on mountainous 2 lane roads as I made my way through some tourist areas back to the interstate. Fuel economy was 32.83 mpg (SID showed around 30 mpg)
The fourth tank was also mid grade 89 octane. Miles were exclusively on the interstate, using cruise control at speeds ranging from 60 mph in construction zones to 73 mph. This leg of the trip covered the same stretch of road as the first tank. The calculated fuel economy for this tank was 33.03 mpg -more than 1.5 mpg better than my earlier trip covering the same ground burning 93 octane gas!
Previously, I adamately believed that fuel economy was better running premium. Apparently, I was ....uh, wrong.
