What I hypothesize is that the higher octane premium helps prevent predetonation in our higher compression engines. Maybe at constant cruising speed and low boost pressures, perhaps pre-detonation is not a factor making the higher octane gas unnecessary.
It may be that there's actually more energy in the lower octane gas.
