I have been fighting this for 10 or 11 months. Warranty replaced the turbo, the throttle body, most of the sensors, you name it. After the turbo replacement a week or two back, it was MUCH better, but still sluggish at times. Last year we switched to ethanol blends in Dallas from MBTE. June was abnormally cool and in mid July, this mess started. My first thoughts were vapor lock. I know doesn't happen with fuel injection right? Wrong, as a mid-80's Isuzu Impulse that I owned had the problem. On that car it only occurred after a hot soak, and they installed a blower that ran at high temps on shutdown. The fuel was turning to vapor in the fuel rail and on hot restart It was a dog until it ran a few miutes to clear the lines. (It wasn't much of a sprinter when it wasn't vapor locking). Hmm, I wandered a bit.
So my first thought was vapor lock on the SAAB. I even tried insulating the fuel lines but it had no effect. I have repeatedly been asked what grade of fuel do I use. In 24K miles maybe 2 tanks were name brand 87,all other tanks are name brand 93, Shell, Chevron, etc.
Somewhere I read that 93 octane contains a higher percentage of ethanol. I keep coming back to heat and ethanol blends.... So last night on the way home the car is being sluggish. On a whim, I pulled into a station and filled the tank with 87 Exxon. It was a tad less than half full when I added the regular. About 2 stop and go miles later it was less sluggish even though traffic and underhood temps were worse, 105-108F on the SID. I am going to run regular for a while and see what happens.
I will keep everyone here posted.
