Thank you guys very much for your help with this, I REALLY appreciate it!
My 9.5 has fairly low mileage for a 2001, only 50K. But it is seven years old. My independent mechanic said I really should change the cam shaft/timing belt and tensioners, but of course he would have to charge me. My dealer refuses to do the work under warranty until it hits 60K (which would probably be about a year from now). I called Saab customer service and they said it was up to the dealer . . . but the dealer claims customer service doesn't know anything about warranties (sounds odd), and that they don't get reimbursed unless car has 60k miles, and that age is irrelevant. The dealer further swears that I have nothing to worry about. (It'd be nice if they would put this in writing, but I know they'd never do it). When pressed about the age v. mileage issue, they claim it is irrelevant and say that if I am that worried about it, just pay for it and they will take do the work.
I am starting to think more about just letting my indy do the work. If under warranty, I'd still have to pay for the tensioners. Can anyone guesstimate how much I'd be saving taking a risk and waiting for the warranty service where the drive belt replacement is covered (and I pay for the tensioners) versus just paying for the whole thing myself? (I have a feeling the dealership would not cut me any break on replacing the tensioners at the same time as the belt . . . if I end up needing to pay for the whole thing, I'd probably just go to my indy).
Any thoughts? Is the dealership right on:
1. Having to wait till 60K contrary to what Saab customer service rep says?
2. Do you think it is really safe/no problem to wait?
3. How much would you guess the cost would be (belt and tensiohners) under warranty versus out of pocket?
4. What would you recommend as being the best action to take?
Thank you all VERY MUCH again for your help with all of this!!!
