Reliability issues, design flaws Posted by SteveR [Email] (#2755) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SteveR) on Sun, 3 Aug 2008 19:07:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Have a 2000 95 wagon - love the handling and power and the wagon is a great SUV alternative. But, the design flaws have me second guessing my commitment to this brand. Where it not for this BB I would have dropped this car long ago. Anticipated problems are never as bad as surprises, so I thank the many posters here for your help over the last few years.
DI Cassette failed on vacation with entire family in tow. I had a spare DI cassette with me - good. I'm driving a car that required owners to carry a spare ignition system - bad. Design flaw finally addressed by Saab, possibly in part due to the noise made by people here.
I lost count of the revisions to the PVC system. Perhaps I should go ahead and install the latest version as it seems to be the last. But I've grown to love the "normal blue smoke" on startup that I suspect is caused by this. I'm going to frame that service receipt. Folks, the oldest Saab dealer in America put it in writing that my blue smoke on startup is normal. Who am I to argue? Design flaw.
This weekend I popped out the alarm module to replace the soldered and glued rechargeable batteries and hopefully eliminate the false alarms. Most owners can't do this but I'm in the electronics business so for me it's not a big deal. I just can't drop $350 when $20 in batteries is all that's needed. Design flaw or planned obsolescence, take your pick.
Also have a sore neck from working under the dash to start the vent blend door shaft repair (no AC or heat on drivers side). Blend door repair kit on order. I have a feeling this issue is present on more cars then we know since so many people would just assume the AC or heat is weak and ignore the issue. I never got an error code, but then again the dash display has so many bad pixels I might have missed it. Blend door shaft stop break is a design flaw, as is the low quality ribbon cable / connector that causes the bad pixels in the dash display.
Sludge. I haven't owned this car from new and so can't prove oil was changed regularly until I took ownership, so if sludge strikes, I'll see no new engine love from Saab. Regular oil changes with Mobil 1 and I'll cross my fingers. At one time I was using the Saab brand synthetic blend oil that was recommended, before they recommended against it. Good grief.
I know all cars have issues, and I'm not expecting Toyota quality here, but am I really being overly critical?
