Yes, there is something to the notion that 89 octane may actually aid cold-weather starting.
Lower octane gas ignites more easily. For this reason it may result in pinging, especially in older cars. This propensity is most evident in warmer weather.
During the winter this tendency to ignite more easily aids starting for the same reason that it has a tendency to ping in hot weather.
The 9-5 engine management system senses and adjusts for pre-ignition. Hence, use of a lower octane gas is fine although a slight decrease in performance may occur. The 9-5 owners manual states this clearly. So, use of a lower octane gas will probably work fine, even in the summer months.
