Check Engine Light probs

I have a 1999 Saab 9-5 SE, 3.0 litre V6 turbo. Bought it about 6 weeks ago, has been perfect until:
Went into town, parked, shopped, returned to car ~30 mins later, car would not start. Tried 3 or 4 times, it was just turning over & not firing.
Called RAC, 2 hours later he arrived & asked to hear what it sounded like when trying to start it. It of course fired up & ran, but the Check Engine light stayed on.
THe RAC man said he would follow me home, I got about 1/2 mile & it conked out dead. He towed me to a car park & started fiddling. He connected his diagnostic machine, but could find no fault, checked under the bonnet with a voltmeter, all ok. He started pulling out fuses, they were all ok, but whilst doing so, the check engine light went out, and the check gearbox light came on! It would start as required whilst he was fiddling...
He ran out of ideas, couldnt get through to his technical helpline so tried again to follow me home. All was well, drove about 4 miles home, performance normal.
Got home, parked up, turned off. RAC man said try it again, it fired up all ok with no warning lights on.
That was about a week ago, have not used it since, but still no warning lights on.
Any ideas, is this a common fault etc etc, any help or background info would be appreciated! thanks
