Filling my '02 Arc... Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Thu, 28 Aug 2008 10:07:20 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I live in New Jersey, so I don't normally pump my own gas. Not by choice, but by law. On a couple recent road trips, I've had occasion to fill up at self-serves in Massachusetts. What has happened has surprised and confused me.
So there I am, filling the tank on my 9-5. It can be down 1/2 tank, or 3/4 tank. The tank fills fine, then once full, the pump handle shuts off.
THEN I am getting this gurgling, and gasoline wells up from the filler, and starts to spill on the ground. And it's not a trivial amount of fuel, either.
This happens:
1) AFTER the pump handle has clicked "off" and the pump has stopped pumping;
2) regardless of whether I released the handle or not
3) on the very first click-off of the pump handle. I don't try to squeeze another dollar's worth in.
The odd thing is (especially relating to #3) is that my local station in NJ they attendant routinely lets the pump shut off, and then he dribbles it in to the next dollar, and there is NO SPILL!
I'm trying to figure out if this is a 9-5 issue, an issue specific to my car, or an issue specific to Massachusetts fuel pumps!
Anyone?
