I gotta hand it to you guys that said you can do it in about 30 minutes. It took me a couple hours of solid effort and I didn't even drain the system first (coolant bypass valve took care of that for me, so I threw in a new thermostat while I was at it). I would actually wager to say replacing the serpentine belt with a new one (long version, even, including pulley replacement) was easier.
The problem was just accessibility. I got the upper rad hose off fairly easily, but getting to the four bolts to remove the thermostat housing was just extremely difficult. I ended up removing the intake tube (to the top of the throttle body) and I attempted to remove that T-shaped metal bracket that holds all of those wiring harnesses in place (but was unsuccessful... at least unbolting it from the engine helped). Even then, I needed to use a long extension on my socket wrench that put the wrench back near the firewall and wedge my other hand under that T-bracket to get onto the bolts and then guide them out. All the wires and cables and hoses were just really in the way. Replacing the coolant bypass valve was actually easier.
Is there some magic trick to all this that I don't know about?
Thanks for reading my vent. She works great now, though!
