Jeff: You are very correct on the basic engine. The Saab four cylinder engine has more bearing surface area than a small block Chevy. When it comes to over engineering other critical drive line components however, the cost and weight/space penalty for those items makes it a lot tougher to justify. Going with CV joints and drive axles that could withstand 350 HP when the car is projected to be sold with 250 means paying for a lot of capability that will never be used or needed. Same goes for transmission components. The engine in a Saab could probably produce 350 hp and be reliable and streetable, but to upgrade the rest of the car would take a lot more engineering.
If my wish list were to come true, the next 9-5 would have about 325 hp, all wheel drive,an electro-hydraulic shifted gearbox, be a little more posh inside than the current car, have XM radio, nicer leather faster windows, and still get almost thirty mpg on the highway.
Anyone else with me on this?
