I beg to differ - the next generation of Air Bags (see the sticker on my MY99 9-5 SW window) may not engage the Fasten Belts sign, but they do detect the presence of either the weight of a person in the front right seat, or the presence of a closed buckle and latch plate, or both.
Most ABMs record other data too, but whether or not the belt had been buckled is of interest to the insurance companies....
And, if you hit something with a SAAB, the control module will deploy the air bag where someone is seated. This may also apply to the side air bags, but only the algorithm can tell, and since we can't use our Vetronix Air Bag Module to download SAAB data, it may be a while before I can answer the question.
In the new generation of controllers, they actually deploy the charge in the airbag at different rates, depending on the weight of the passenger. And if you are not wearing a seatbelt, it will deploy anyway, and wish you the best.
