to loosen the lugs a few turns so the seating area of the lug clears the wheel, maybe by 1/8th of an inch. Then rock the car sideways fairly vigorously. Basically does the same as jacking the opposite side but you just skip the jacking part. Had to do this on all 4 corners of a Volvo wagon we used to have. Not a fun time.
Either method puts a lot more force on the wheel than you can with a rubber mallet and can even work when you have to break it loose by the side of the road in the rain at 2 AM.
