Some advice... (long) Posted by B Millar [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Advice on inspecting a 2000 9-5 V6, Joe ![]() |
How long are you planning on keeping this car? I have a 2001 9-5 sedan with the V6, and 181k miles, and I'm thinkin' it's not going to last too much longer without some BIGTIME expenses i.e. engine rebuild. If something big goes wrong anytime soon I will be looking for a newer (2004+) 9-5 with less than 50k miles. I bought mine with 159k miles on it in 2006. I have since put 22k miles on it and spent $5500 in maintenance ALONE on the car. $1500 of that was for the turbo, which was definitely shot, blowing blue smoke everywhere. Got that replaced, and it stopped smoking after acceleration but it still smokes after startup. So we found that the PCV was plugged up. Replaced all that for ~$350. STILL SMOKING and consuming oil. So I'm thinking the oil pressure switch is stuck and the oil pressure is way too high, forcing oil through places it shouldn't get. Or it could be piston rings, or valve stem seals. Either way, they're all $$$ to repair. More than the car is worth. I talked to a guy named Pete in the UK who worked in the Ellesmere Port plant where the engine was made. He now has a business servicing all these GM 54 deg V6 engines (Saturns, Cadillacs, Opels, Vauxhalls...) and he said they almost always need a complete rebuild/overhaul by 150k miles.
I'm not trying to trash Saab at all, and the V6 IS an excellent engine, it's just not going to last 300k miles like some of the Saab 4-cyls do. If the price is right (CHEAP) and you're just looking for a couple years out of it it's probably a decent bet though. Definitely look for oil consumption, oil in the intake boot before the throttle body, blue smoke out the tail pipe at start up or after HARD acceleration. Give it a couple to-the-floor poundings and watch the rear view mirror. Here's my maintenance list. The guy I bought it from had all his receipts too so I put those in. I've done a few hundred more dollars of work since the list. It still needs quite a bit of work in the suspension department. Lots of bushings are worn and creaking, and I think the springs are tired as I get a lot of body roll in the twisties. It's been a really fun car and I've learned a lot from it but it's definitely very tired. Good luck with your purchase!
