Similar/identical recommendation for my 2000...... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 1999 2.3L oil, jkrowas, Tue, 4 Nov 2008 14:02:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I used Mobil-1 10W/30 for a few years baed upon the Owner's Manual recommendation, then switched to 0W/40 Euro formula when that was introduced. After experiencing oil usage problems with the 0W/40 (possibility PCV system related) I then switched to 5W/40, an oil marketed for diesel engine useage because of its higher level of anti-wear additives.
Although I have used a variety of brands; primarily Mobil-1, a little Shell Rotella-T, Elf, and now Total, I have stayed with the 5W/40 weight.
Is the extra anti-wear additives worth it? Well, I just had my original timing chain replaced today after more than 235,000 miles. The timing chain had stretched enough to advance the tensioner 14mm (with a maximum limit of 15mm). I plan to stick with the higher anti-wear additive oils as I view this as very good life for the chain.
