Saab sort of discouraged use of synthetic oil for many, many years. Approval only came when Saab marketed a synthetic oil with Saab on the label.
I've been using synthetic in my Saabs for over 30 years now.
As a practical matter, your 1999 recommended 10W-40 or 10W-30 because that was basically available then. With a good synthetic, the pour point is so low that there will be minimal difference in startup drag between a 0w or 10W except in extreme cold (like well below 0 F). You can use a 0W- in any application which calls for 5W- or 10W. Mobil 1 is excellent oil- the extended drain Mobil 1 would be my choice.
Far as the comment about diesel oils having a more robust additive package:
The additive package for diesels is different, because the oil is designed for different conditions. As an example, oils designed for diesel engines will address soot, not necessary for gasoline engines.
Most oils designed for gas engines are also suitable for light duty diesels. Most oils designed for heavy duty diesels are also suitable for gasoline engines, but may not be the optimum choice.
