I had a friend who was carrying home a "weekend project" in his car, and was in an accident on his way home from a "Big Box Store".
The "weekend project" became projectiles at his head in the impact....he required extensive reconstructive surgery and vows he'd never do the lumber act it again...he's now still very concerned about groceries and the consequences of any accident when he/his wife/family just go to the store.
Great advice on the roof racks
