PIC 4450A is a bulletin about piston damage that may be caused by faulty MAF readings.

Service and Warranty Reference Library

Date: July 2, 2008

Piston Damage Due to Excessive Detonation While Driving Saab 9-3/9-5-PIC4450A

Models:
1999-2003 Saab 9-3 with Trionic 7 Only
1999-2008 Saab 9-5 with Trionic 7 Only

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

CONDITION/CONCERN:

A technician or customer may comment of detonation while driving. The concern may be intermittent or more noticeable when the vehicle is driven aggressively and is more likely to occur at high altitude and/or high ambient temps. No codes are usually present and in extreme cases repeat engine damage may have occurred. This condition is more prevalent in the high/full boost cars using the B205L/R or B235R engine variant in the 9-3/9-5.

RECOMMENDATION/INSTRUCTIONS:

If a technician comments they find excessive detonation and/or cylinder/piston damage (usually on #1 or #4 cyl). Ask that the long-term (aka multiplicative) fuel trim be checked before any repairs are made. NOTE: This must be performed before the battery is disconnected or DTCs cleared since this will reset the fuel trim reading. This is especially important in the event of internal engine damage. In most cases it takes several miles (up to 100) before the long-term trim will give an accurate reading indicating a lean condition. NOTE: ANY AGGRESSIVE DRIVING BEFORE THE FAULT HAS BEEN RECTIFIED MAY CAUSE ADDITIONAL ENGINE DAMAGE. If a lean condition is observed and no codes are found continue fault tracing per WIS for a P0171 code. If no fault is found have technician swap the MAF sensor and continue testing vehicle under varying load conditions.
