Gee, I feel your pain. I had a noise like that in a Volvo 940 once that I never was able to figure out.
In my S70, I had a front upper spring seat go out but it made a sqeak type noise. However, the right rear upper strut mount is starting to go and it does make a knock or pop noise when under load, especially lateral load.
Also IMHO, bouncing doesn't tell me much as it comes nowhere near the forces applied under load - even driving slowly.
Is the knock more associated with suspension movement or wheel RPM? ie, is it random and intermittent or is is rythmic? You said something about when you steered one way it knocked - does it knock repeatedly or just once when you begin to steer R/L or swerve?
I know this is really reaching, but if the knock is not rythmic - do you think it could be an engine or transmission mount failing so that your getting metal on metal movement when you change directions?
Good luck!
