In areas where full A/C chill is not a big demand, the valve does not get exercised as often and the diaphragm might not rupture early.
Also, many and most of the times by choosing a higher temperature than full cold, even a ruptured valve will stop leaking.
Another permanent solution is to find a Scandinavian market heater hose setup (P/N 5463252) which will do away with the bypass valve all together and turn the car into what the 900/9-3 have looked like until 2002.
For some or another reason, those heater hoses are not in hot demand so they are hard to find in US.
