, which is simply to always force hot coolant through the heater core?
To simulate this, you could pull off the vacuum hose and block it with a nail (to avoid a vacuum leak). I will try this when the weather gets warmer here in New England, to see how much A/C performance degrades. Perhaps someone down south could try it sooner?
Excellent point about the valve getting excercised less in colder climates. Looking at how mine was deisigned and built and how it failed, it is evident that repeated flexing would accelerate failure. If we were going to do another poll, we could ask about climate and season of failure - we would likely find that failures are more likely in warmer climates and during those months when more A/C performance is needed.
Selecting a higher temp would remove vacuum, allowing the spring to push the valve to the non-bypass position, stretching out both diaphrams - not sure how that diminishes the leak.
