Well, folks, after the premature end of my pristine 2000 V6 wagon (unceremoniously squashed in a snow storm a couple weeks back), a 99 V6 wagon has blipped my radar screen, at a price that might even rival the amazing deal I got on that 2000.

This one's got a bit more miles on the clock, and the owner reports that the ABS light is on. I have no more details than that so far, but wonder a couple things:

1. Are there any ways to tell offhand, while testing out said vehicle, whether this is a module gone mad, a wheel sensor, or the entire pump assembly? For instance, if the speedo works, does that suggest the module is okay?
2. Did 99 V6s have traction control and am I required to use a TCS-spec module/pump unit if replacing with a used part?
3. It seems that module rebuilds are often successful, but I am seeing complete pump units (with module) on fleabay for sometimes under $200, inviting the option of going for the used unit in case the module isn't the problem. Is this insane thinking on my part?

My hopes are high for this one. I plan on finding out that this is merely a bad wheel sensor, and this will be a nice bargaining chip to drive the price down even deeper on this one. Positive thinking, dontcha know.

Then I'll have a nice car (I even like the color better) and I can find out how much quicker I can do a timing belt the second time around.

I had briefly convinced myself not to replace the 9-5 but once again you just can't find a better car for anywhere near the bargain a Saab can be.

I appreciate any and all comments about how to assess the ABS situation, if it's at all possible without a Tech II.
