Shift light is RPM dependent...rev it with the clutch in.

There is a pretty good jump between first and second gears. I usually shift up towards 3000 RPMs just to match RPMs/ratios. If no traffic is around I can shift all the other gears at 2000 or when the light comes on but if there is traffic around and I try shifting at those RPMs I get run over. :)
The 9-5 Aero has 4.11 gears which might help in shift at a lower RPMs without bogging the engine.
