is really an early warning system, designed to let you know that for some reason the coolant does not seem to be warming up fast enough. It's telling you that something needs to be done soon, not that you are in imminent danger of destroying your engine. The fact that when you reset the timer via a restart and the engine shows warm indicates that it is eventually coming up to temp. I assume you get good heat from the HVAC?
With an 80 mile commute, I would assume all the condensates are getting burned off pretty well, but I would not let it go this way all winter. When I replaced mine I couldn't believe how fast i got heat - it was really nice... Anyway, the concern would be a vehicle that is only going 5 miles in cold weather with a sluggish T-stat - there one might be contributing to a sludge situation.
