Audis CAN be very expensive to maintain. Doesn't mean they ALWAYS are.
I think the BMW would have a definite edge over both the Saab and the Audi in reliability. But the comparison between the A4 and the 9-5 is again very apply-and-orangy. The 9-5 is a ten-year-old design that's over the hill, the A4 very much not. The current 9-5s are without question the ugliest cars on the planet, the A4 very much not (like how I stick to the facts and avoid opinion?).
You won't equal the Saab's fuel economy and the A4 isn't cheap, but if their prices were on par I'd definitely go in the Audi direction.
Timing belt job is overblown, by the way. Front end of the car comes off in minutes if you're used to the job. Like most cars, you're nuts to contemplate the job without the appropriate tools. But if you're buying new, you won't need to concern yourself with the procedure until 60K miles or thereabouts, and maybe it's even covered in the maintenance plan?
