I know Audi's are good cars and I looked hard at used ones when I bought my latest 2004 Arc last Fall because I like the suspension/drivetrain refinement and the styling. I was prepared to buy either an 05-06 A4 or 04-05 A6 but ended up realizing they have issues also. For one thing, earlier (pre-2005.5) 1.8 models have the sludge issue even worse than Saab does. Google it. V6 and later 2.0 models are better, just like Saab.
I was also suprised to find that on several 3-4 year old Audis the finish was wearing off on the interior wear points - radio buttons, interior door handles, ignition key surround. Ick. One gorgeous A6 with only 36K looked well-worn on the inside. My 01 9-5, by comparison, looks new inside. Quite suprising. I found the red instrument lights hard to see at night due to my deteriorating close-up vision, whereas I can still see the old-fashioned green 9-5 gauges just fine. The ground clearance on the A6 was about 4" - woops, guess I won't be able to take it into a campground.
In addition, the Audis I drove got worse mpg, even the FWD models I tested. When I drove the 2005 A4 2.0 (not quattro) which is rated over 30mpg, I was suprised to find I could not hold more than 28mpg avg on the highway over the 20 mile test loop I was using. The A6 3.0 with Multitronic was actually a bit better - about 29-30 mpg (taller gearing). But a 9-5 will pull 32 mpg on the same loop I used (flat fwy at 65-70mph) day in and day out. I drove all of them back to back. At the time gas was $4.65/gal here and I drive a lot (work car) so it mattered.
I will acknowledge that all the Audis drove very well, and I especially liked the A6 - but it just wasn't worth the extra expense. The Audis basically were all $16-20K and my Arc cost me $12K with 40K on it. With the other factors just mentioned it was a no-brainer - "Hello Saab Number 3". Your priorities and conclusions may be different.
