I've done this twice.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: The center pully is a royal pain but can be done, dudethe9-5isfast, Sat, 24 Jan 2009 11:41:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I changed out my center idler at around 120K miles , and again this fall before I hit the 240K point. My car uses a hex head bolt for the center idler pulley, 10mm may be the size.
If you can't get the old pulley off, then stay with the short belt.
If you can get the pulley off, the easiest (only?) method to re-install the pulley uses criss-cossed tape to hold the bolt in the bore of the pulley, and you actually use the pulley as a hand-wheel to get the bolt threads started. I used duct tape rather than electrical tape since it offers a greater surface area to grasp the head of the bolt.
I needed over 30 minutes to properly align the pulley bolt and get the threads started the first time I did this job. I only needed 5 minutes this past fall to do the same thing. Conceiveably it can be done in 30 seconds if you are lucky. Limited space and working blind are your constraints.
