I did it because my 01 had a questionable maintenance history prior to my purchase at 67K and was also making a whining noise on cold winter startups which I suspect may have been pump starvation. The indy didn't want to do it (had used the coathanger) but I insisted, and when he called me he said he was glad they did - there was some definite clogging of the screen.
I have been diligent with Mobil 1 at 5K since purchase but those early years when it was a leased vehicle probably started the sludging. After being cleaned out at 90K it's still running fine at 117.5K, and is used mainly for highway trips now. No smoke, original turbo, very comfortable car, to the extent that if the engine blew I might even stick in a replacement.
