There is always a debate about ride height is 100% springs and has nothing to do with dampers. From my expierence, gas charged shocks do add some preload to the assembly. My 1991 Audi 200 20vt had gas shocks from the factory and would sit low and rub on the strut bearings when ever a shock went out. New shocks would bring the ride height back to spec.
Before I replaced the factory shocks with HD's, the rear drivers side was about .5-.75 lower than the passenger side. Alignment was out of spec and could not be correted. The passenger side was just in the factory spec.
New shocks installed and my wagon sits level.
