There are typically only two sets of Latch anchors in the back, but there are three sets of belts, and the design likely assumes that there will be three adults on four seat belt anchor positions, since the inboard anchors are shared.
We have two 9-5 wagons, MY99 without Latch, and MY05 with Latch. I have a set of Eddie Bauer seats in one, and Britax Marathons in the other. My twins are 5 next week, and are weighing in at 40 to 42 lbs, with heights of around 42 inches.
I think that the people who directed you to check the load rating were acting, as we say, with an abundance of caution. I don't worry about the load rating, but I do ensure that the seats are secured, whether using the Latch or the seatbelts.
Another engineer in our office noticed that the new version of the Marathon is now more highly rated, since the FMVSS had changed recently. My guys prefer the Marathons anyway, so I am pleased they can stay in them for a while longer.
