and you should use it somewhat sparingly. But verify that in what Akebono says in their packaging. They could mean lubricant for the backs of the pads (see below). I also wire brush the caliper slides and the removable frames before applying the lubricant. I use the brush wheel on my grinder or a wire wheel on my cordless drill. It's nice to get the corrosion off before greasing it up and putting it all back together.
You might also want to pick up a packet of "Disc Brake Quiet" or similar goop that you put on the back of the pad, as BMillar's photo showed. That puts a coating on the back of the pad that reduces squeal, which is a result of the pad vibrating. You can get little packets of the stuff at auto parts stores, often on a rack at the counter. For DIYers who don't do brakes everyday this is the easy way to buy this kind of product. Not all pads require it, though, and I think Akebonos have some kind of film on the back that does the job. I still put the quieting goop on the back, but am not sure it's essential.
