I know exactly what you mean. My SE V-6 is off lease soon and I've been trying to decide between an Arc and Aero wagon to replace it. The six is more refined in daily driving but lacks the thrilling thrust of the Aero, but is no slouch. The Aero has better seats, the Arc rides better but is a tad softer in the corners. What I'd really like is the Arc with the Aero seats and a bit more boost to improve the top end between 4-6,000 rpm.
At the risk of starting a firestorm of controversy, I think for Saab to be a serious player in the 40K+ arena, they need an Aero with a 6, wether it be the existing one beefed up or the new generation shown in the concept cars, the added refinement of the 6 is desireable. Yes, the 4 goes like stink, yes, it will last forever, yes, it gives great economy and is arguably the best 4 cylinder engine in production, but, it does shake on idle, it does shudder if lugged at low RPM and it lacks that smoothness throughout operation that is evident in 6 and 8 cylinder engines.
I was very concerned about the V-6 when it first came out, but it was an easy decision over the lackluster 170HP 4 in 1999. Now I've got 43,000 trouble free miles on it and think it's pretty darned good.
That said, I'm still undecided!!!
