2001 V6 Automatic

Was driving along for about 20 minutes on a 40MPH road with cruise set. All of a sudden the Tach surges, the car shifts and then the tranny light goes on. I pull over about 2000 ft to the next turn to stop the car. I notice that the RPMs are much higher then they should be. running about 3K instead of 1700K at the speed. I pull in, stop the car, pop the hood and everything looks OK. Start it back up - drive home - everything seems fine. Get to my street which is an incline and the car can't make it to the top of the hill. I stop the car, restart and am able to pull into my driveway.

I looked over the vacuum hoses and replaced a couple that looked worn. One was pretty brittle. I drive the car a couple miles (tranny light still on), make a stop then when I restart the car the tranny light goes off. I drive home a few more miles - uneventful.

Take it out today for a drive and about 20 minutes into the drive the car starts having acceleration issue from a stop. Seems like I have to press the pedal down quite a bit and then it surges and "sputters". The car will move forward, but it seems like a real effort. Finally get to my destination. Couple hours later, drive home, same situation. about 20 minutes into the drive it develops this hesitation issue and acceleration seems to be laborious. There is also a "buzzing" sound coming from what appears to be under the battery.

This afternoon I inspected all the hoses and they seem good. I pulled out the throttle body (far as I can tell it is not in limp-home mode). Cleaned it out - checked all the hoses - things looks good. Put it back together and took it out for a drive. Was working great for 10 to 15 miles then I came to another stop and the car again has the acceleration issue coupled with the buzzing from under the battery area. Turn off the car, start it up and buzzing sound is gone. Drive home (less then a mile) - hesitation issue and buzzing sound return.

It seems that the hesitation problem develops after the car is adequately warm. A restart seems to "reset" something, only to return a while later.

I am going to see if I can pull codes tomorrow. Anyone have any similar experience? Ideas what it could be?

I changed the tranny fluid 10K or so ago and the transmission itself seems fine. Shifting is normal.
