My 2005 Arc has also always had a slight antifreeze smell. It did have a problem with a water pump gasket a few years ago.
The smell persists, without your other issues. I wouldn't jump to the head gasket issue right away though. It could be a fuel system issue - I recently had a file in which the filling station managed to fill 12 cars' tanks with water....
On the other hand, a starting problem I noticed, in which the first time it wouldn't catch, followed by another try in which there were no problems, was determined to be the coolant temperature sensor which was throwing a code to the EMU, with the wrong values. Must have been a software glitch. Solved the issue.
Good luck, I will be watching your posts.
