I had a similar experience test driving a 2001 Boxster a few years ago, but the 2005 model we bought last year has 240 hp (vs. 217 in 01-02) and it's significantly faster. As others have noted, you have to rev it, since there's not a lot of torque down low like the 9-5 (ours is a 2005 Aero).
I absolutely love driving our Boxster. It's plenty fast for me, it steers and handles extremely well, and it has outstanding brakes. There is also plenty of room for two people and some luggage, too, which can't be said for some other sports cars. The 2005 and newer models (987) had many improvements over the previous model (986), in addition to a stronger engine.
A Miata is a reliable, fun sports car, but it's no Boxster. It's also pretty small. I've never driven the S-2000, but understand that it's really a high rpm machine, and it's also tiny. If you want a fast, affordable sports car, with room for real people and some luggage, a C5 Vette would be worth a test drive.
