If you don't get much snow where you live you can certainly live without winter tires. Just drive carefully in the white stuff and know that there are situations where the tires make a huge difference in safety and traction. A regular "all-season" will NOT be as good as the Nokians in snow.
There are any number of good "all-season" tires that should be plenty durable. IMHO, the big name brands are better than the others, but that can be argued. All season is more a measure of rubber flexibility in cold temps than of snow traction. And a M&S rating doesn't mean anything.
As Stephen notes above, read both Condemner Reports and Tire Rack. The guy who owns my local tire store says he uses Tire Rack's info to help him sell tires and make recommendations.
Some tire stores will store your tires for you and do a free changeover. Worth looking into.
