Being a tightwad, I don't like to spend more than I have to for anything. And there is usually a reason a given product is more expensive that less costly ones it competes with. Sure, well-known brands have the cost of advertising and marketing built into their price, along with all the R&D. The advertising and marketing is 90% BS (I'm in that business), but the R&D is really worth something... and makes a difference.
While seeming identical items --such as Yokohoma and National Ovation tires CrNiFe mentions-- can be made in the same factory, it doesn't necessarily mean they are the same tire. Unless Nat. Ovation is owned by Yokohama I somehow doubt Yokohama is just letting them use their intellectual property and materials engineering. The mold, which makes them look the same, would seem to be the least costly part of the tire manufacturing process--and easily shared. The overall construction, materials specification, rubber compounds are what make the difference. Maybe they're the same. Or maybe they aren't.
Is your life worth $30 a corner over the life of the tires?
