From an engine sludge perspective, I do not believe there is a year where one can say the sludge problem stopped. The PCV #6 update is more of a preventative measure (like frequent oil changes) that would minimize risk of engine sludge (failure), but it is not 100%.
There are BB members who have had engine sludge lead to engine replacement and they swear on synthetic oil changes every 5k.
I personally believe the root cause is the proximity of the catalytic converter to the oil pan (those can correct me if they wish) that provides additonal heat to the motor oil on top of the operational heat from the 2.3l engine.
I have not had a problem and do maintain oil changes at 4k-5k intervals, I have the PCV6 update, but I do not for one second think of extending an oil change interval.
I have a 2002 95 Aero, and mechanically, unless corrected, there is no difference betwene a 2004 and my vehicle.
It's a great car, just have to baby the oil.
hope this helps.
