I did the same to my 2002 Aero a year ago. I've been getting 20-30 mpgs ever since! (LOL) Anywho, the lights don't light up anymore on the onstar, but there aren't any error messages anywhere either. I don't think I've yet used the extra inch and a half of storage I gained, tho.
Funny you should mention the onstar buttons as a conversation piece - I think more people exclaim "Oh! You have OnStar?!?" than "Wow, is that a turbo I hear?!" or "Hey, nice SID ... all the pixels are there!"
