A slight ping is probably OK, since the ECU is adjusting things to get the maximum energy content from the fuel mixture. Hard knocking is not good, but a little rattle every now and then is OK.
My '97 900SE does this every now and then...and has for the last 130K miles.
Look at your spark plugs and see if there is carbon buildup there. Techron is good stuff...run a bottle through and see if things improve. I use it about every 20K or whenever I remember.
