I don't think that you can ever tie something too securely. It is easy to not be sufficiently secure. From many years of towing my sail boat to regattas I found that no matter how securly you thought something was fastened something always managed to work loose over long distances. We haven't talked about hitting severe bumps and etc. which can give you momentary loads far greater than anticipated.
