9-5 reliability

In my search for a wagon with character, I am very impressed with the 9-5 v6 and Aero, and the local dealer has a couple of new '01's and an '01 demo he is willing to deal on ('02 would be a budget-buster). I am very tempted, but am concerned about reliability. The latest data from Consumer Repts and other sources makes the 9-5 appear at least as reliable as the competition, but 2 professional technicians who I know well and trust, and who specialize in European cars say "don't do it." I suppose I can reconcile this information by considering that what the tech's see are older cars (e.g., 9000's) that were less reliable. But is there some explanation/reason for the improved reliability of the 9-5? I doubt it is attributable to GM's involvement (although to the extent the V-6 is a Saturn engine, I note that Saturn engine reliability is actually pretty good).
Also, assuming I can get over that hurdle and make an offer on the '01 Aero, how can I assess its value? On the one hand, its new; on the other hand, it will be a year-old used car the minute I take the keys, and it is less desireable than the hotter '02 (also, its an automatic). Dealer says it will be "under invoice" but it seems to me it should be a ways under invoice. The demo (factory rep's car) is easier- its basically a used car w/ 7k on it-unfortunately not an Aero, but more likely to be priced right.
Thanks for any thoughts on this.
